Kutaisi is one of the most beautiful and ancient Georgian cities situated in the west of the country on both banks of the picturesque Rioni River. It is internationally known as Crown Jewel of King Aeetes -- ruler of the heroic Kingdom of Colchis, birthplace of Medea and home to Golden Fleece where Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Greece risking their lives for fame. Your tour explores two of Kutaisi's most stunning highlights: Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction of Bagrati Cathedral, named after Bagrat III, the first king of united Georgia, started at the end of the 10th century and was completed in the early years of the 11th century. Although partly destroyed by the Turks in 1691, its ruins still lie in the centre of Kutaisi. Gelati, whose main buildings were erected between the 12th and 17th centuries, is a well-preserved complex comprising a monastery, academy and churches, with wonderful mosaics and wall paintings. The only surviving portrait of King David the Builder, as well as his grave, can be found in the monastery. The cathedral and monastery represent the flowering of medieval architecture in Georgia. The guests take lunch boxes from the ship and have lunch on a bus or during the wine tasting which includes khachapuri cheese cakes and four different kinds of wine. Alternatively they can enjoy the typical Georgian lunch accompanied by a folk show.
