One of the Sevastopol city areas is the famous Balaklava Bay which housed Russian submarine base back in Soviet times and where there is a fascinating marine museum now. Near Balaklava there is the so called "The Death Valley" where the light cavalry of Lord Cardigan lost most of its warriors in the fatal "Charge of the Light Brigade" in 1854. In Balaklava the fame of Florence Nightingale (a well-known British nurse and writer) began in 1855.
